Honorable Mention On the Other Side of the Mirror Gary Blankenship You pulled me through the looking glass without so much as a “by your leave” or “Watch your step, the first’s a doozie!” We struggle to remember details of sight, sound as we work to forget why we moved away from a belief the world could be better If only we were listened to, if only they would step aside, if only we felt the music, if only love. We moved on, But you pull us back to leave behind unripe peaches, unmowed grass, sun tea as dark as the mirror’s reverse, unhatched eggs, cold coffee and undeveloped film. I want tomorrow to be cool, a light rain to wash clean the clematis; I want to wake tomorrow and see a spider’s web on the screen door. I want sunsets not colored by yesterday’s mistakes and the sun to rise yellow until winter bleaches the sky. I want to break the looking glass and turn away from images you’ve etched into the shards. As I pass through the reflection, silver staining my unshaved chin, who listens to swallows or an old man’s whims?
